Dear That’s Not Cool Advocates & Educators,

Happy belated Valentine’s Day! That’s Not Cool is proud to announce the launch of a new video as part of our speaking avatar application on February 15, 2012 to coincide with National Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month! Launched last year, the speaking avatar tool encourages teens to have their say when it comes to pressure and control in their relationships. After watching an animated video addressing digital dating abuse on the homepage, users create a personalized character and voice to respond to the question posed at the end of the video. Each unique video entry can be posted and shared on www.thatsnotcool.com.

Hundreds of teens have already created unique avatar videos, and we encourage you to use the avatar tool with the teens in your work. The newest video will prompt users to respond to the question: “Sharing passwords with your boyfriend or girlfriend…Cool or not cool?”. The video offers an opportunity for the campaign to represent a diversity of youth relationships, as it features a lesbian couple.

That’s Not Cool partnered with the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the New York City LGBT Community Center, and Community United Against Violence (CUAV) to create a video that would speak to LGBTQ youth. See attached for a Teen Safety Plan we created specifically for working with LGTBQ youth.

We hope you will share the avatar tool with the teens in your work. Additionally, please help us to promote the new video through your social media channels. Below are a few sample tweets and a template Facebook post you can use to get the word out about the new video. “Like” the campaign on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for the most recent updates.

(4) Article in the journal Pediatrics: “Children and Adolescents with Gender Identity Disorder Referred to a Pediatric Medical Center”

This is the Feb 20 issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Among the authors’ conclusions: “Our study highlights the importance of educating pediatricians about care guidelines for children and adolescents with GID. Often, the first discussion parents have about  gender-variant behaviors is with their child’s pediatrician. Many of our adolescent patients report that it was their pediatrician who first asked if they were experiencing gender-related issues, which became the springboard to counseling and further medical evaluation. Even if patients are too young to receive medical treatment, they and their families can benefit from counseling to cope with the difficulties of being or raising a gender variant child.”
