(1) New “Gender 101” study guide for high school and community college groups

 

We are excited to announce that this 16-page study guide, authored by Caryn Oppenheim, is now available for free download on the Safe Schools Coalition web site: http://www.safeschoolscoalition.org/gender101/

 

It contains chapters on "Fluidity, Categorization, and Vocabulary," “Coming Out,” "Language and Homophobia," "Intersections of Identity," "Testimonies," and "International Perspectives."

 

NOTE: Parts of the guide generate Lexile Scores of as low as 1080 (about 6th grade reading level) but parts score as high as 1450 (college reading).

(4) Three support groups for gender non-conforming, gender questioning, genderqueer and trans children and youth ages 4-21 -- in Portland, OR

 

Butterflies and Fireflies and Vanguard support groups are all sponsored by TransActive Education & Advocacy.

 

Butterflies is a peer group for children ages 4-9. It meets weekly at the TransActive office in SE  Portland. Following curriculum adapted by TransActive staff for gender nonconforming children and youth, Butterflies provides a fun environment in which kids can:

•Identify personal strengths and feelings

•Increase coping skills and self-confidence

•Share experiences of being gender nonconforming with others

•Find healthy ways to make sense of their experiences and feelings

•Provide a safe place to express feelings with others who share their experience

•Encourage kids to develop friendships and support networks with each other

Fireflies A peer group for children ages 10-13 meeting weekly at the TransActive office in SE  Portland. Following curriculum adapted by TransActive staff for gender nonconforming children and youth, Fireflies provides a fun environment in which kids can:

•Share experiences of being gender nonconforming with others

•Find healthy ways to make sense of their experiences and feelings

•Provide a safe place to express feelings with others who share their experience

•Encourage kids to develop friendships and support networks with each other

•Discuss and find answers to questions related to puberty, growing up, hormones, romantic attractions, school challenges and more.

Vanguard is a monthly peer support group for people ages 14-21. It meets the 4th Saturday, 11:00-1:00.

Meet and socialize with other gender nonconforming, gender questioning, genderqueer and trans youth. Youth friends and allies (same age restrictions) are welcome. Share your stories, gain support from your peers, and learn from the experiences of others. Access resources and information on

•Coming out to, educating, & gaining the support of friends and family

•Understanding and asserting your legal rights at school

•Accessing respectful and affordable medical and mental health care

•Exploring your options around social and medical transition
