(1) Scenarios USA Professional Development Workshop: Teaching students to write creatively about critical youth issues, with the opportunity to be involved in a true Hollywood filmmaking experience (Sept 20; Brooklyn, NY)

Who All teachers and youth-serving professionals, especially teachers in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Health Education and Theater/ Moving Image Arts, who teach students grades 6-12, in the five boroughs of New York City.

What This free 3-hour workshop will introduce teachers to the Scenarios USA “What’s the REAL DEAL about Gender, Power and Relationships?” Curriculum and the 2011-12 story, play and scriptwriting contest. Participants will explore how the curriculum can help students meet the Core Curriculum Standards for English Language Arts, and the New York learning standards for Social Studies, Health Education and Arts. Workshop participants will receive a free contest kit, including a curriculum, 20 writer’s journals and 3 Scenarios USA short films. Contest winners will receive $500; turn their story into a film with a Hollywood director; and will be trained in public speaking and advocacy.

Why Teachers, administrators, community members, parents and students have told us the same thing: untangling the meanings of gender is important and engaging to all young people. The Scenarios USA approach of putting gender at the heart of Language Arts, Social Studies, Theater/Moving Image and Health Education promotes higher level thinking skills, helps students build confidence in their own voice, changes attitudes which are linked to sexual health risk and violence, and improves students’ overall educational experience.

When Tuesday, September 20th, 2011, 4:00 7:00 pm

Where Scenarios USA, 80 Hanson Pl, Conference Room (4th Floor) Brooklyn, NY 11217

RSVP via email to Ernestine Heldring, Director of Education and Outreach, at ernestine@scenariosusa.org.

(3) KNOW US PROJECT (KUP) Training sponsored by PFLAG Detroit (Sept 24; Troy, MI)

KUP conversations tell personal stories about what it has been like to experience discrimination, bias, prejudice, or even hate crimes.

The goal of the KNOW US PROJECT (KUP) is to improve the understanding by ordinary Americans of the stigma and discrimination faced by people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) and their allies. As individuals become sensitized to the mental health consequences of discrimination and stigma, research tells us that they are more likely to actively support public policy regarding equality for LGBT people.

SKILLS PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN IN A KUP TRAINING:
KUP training's are facilitated by experienced and skilled mental health professionals or by those with considerable experience and education in LGBT issues and the emotional consequences of stigma and discrimination.

KUP Learning Objectives:
· How to evaluate the risks and rewards of having KUP conversations.
· How to identify people to speak with -- those who are part of the "moveable middle."
· How to reduce the listener's anxiety in a personal conversation about LGBT issues.
· Practice the words and body language that will make a KUP conversation more effective.
· Recognize possible negative feelings and emotions that may be experienced during or after KUP conversations and learn to address them through self-care, stress management and professional help if indicated.
