(2) 3rd Biennial (first national) LGBTIQ Domestic Violence Conference (Sept 16; Sydney, Australia)

The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) Domestic Violence Conference is a unique platform which focuses on domestic violence in LGBTIQ relationships (both across Australia and including international perspectives).

The conference is being organised by the NSW LGBTIQ Domestic Violence Interagency Working Group. This group includes representatives from government and community organisations working to prevent domestic violence in LGBTIQ communities and/ or providing services to affected individuals and/or their families. In 2011 the conference will focus on social and cultural inclusion and diversity for LGBTIQ people and their families who have experienced domestic violence. Our aim is to influence systemic change by working towards an inclusive national model of practice for working with people of diverse sex, sexuality and  gender.

ABOUT LARAMIE PROJECT 10 YEARS LATER:

On October 6th of 1998 Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming.  He died six days later.  His murder became a watershed historical moment in America that highlighted the violence and prejudice lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people face.  A month after the murder, the members of Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie and conducted interviews with the people of the town.  From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project, which they later made into a film for HBO.  One of the most performed plays of the last decade, the piece has been seen by more than 50 million people around the country. The Laramie Project 10 Years Later is the sequel to this play.  The epilogue focuses on the long-term effect of the murder of Matthew Shepard on the town of Laramie.  It explores how the town has changed and how the murder continues to reverberate in the community.  The play also includes new interviews with Matthew's mother Judy Shepard and Mathew's murderer Aaron McKinney, who’s serving dual life sentences, as well as follow-up interviews with many of the individuals from the original piece.
