(1) HELP NEEDED: Maryland 2-1-1 needs your vote in the Pepsi Challenge to help with their anti-bullying program

From former Safe Schools Coalition volunteer extraordinaire, Tom Page, who is now with Maryland 2-1-1:

I wanted to share some exciting news with you and the Safe Schools folks.  2-1-1 Maryland got word today that we are in the running for a $50,000 grant from the Pepsi Challenge to expand an anti-bullying pilot project started by Western Maryland 2-1-1  and United Way of Frederick County.  The funding would help us expand the project across Maryland.  It would be particularly helpful to kids in rural areas, giving them access to support and resources to respond effectively to help stop bullying in their community.

This is the first 2-1-1 project in the country to qualify for the Pepsi Challenge and it would be great to have the network of Safe Schools folks vote for and help spread the word about the project.  People can vote one per day online and once per day by text message from their cell phone:   http://www.refresheverything.com/211md-stop-bullying.

If we can show this works in Maryland, I think we can replicate the project across the country to help keep kids safe and healthy in schools.

Thanks for your help!

Tom

(3) U.S. Department of Education Launches a new Web site to Commemorate the 10th Anniversary of September 11, 2001.

A new web site is now available from the U.S. Department of Education with 9/11 Materials for Teachers. This new web site presents a set of resource materials focused on the anniversary of 9/11, which were developed under federal grants supported by the U.S. Department of Education.

The resources can be used by teachers in carrying out classroom activities to commemorate the 10th anniversary. Further, the web site provides a link to the grantee’s host site, where you can access the full set of resource materials. Also, links are provided to a number of other updated federal agencies that offer access to educational resources focused on the anniversary of 9/11.

In addition, our country will be celebrating Constitution Day on September 17. Some of the materials, in addition to commemorating the anniversary of 9/11, underscore the importance of the Constitution and its underlying principles to our democracy.

We invite you to visit the dedicated site: http://www.ed.gov/911anniversary
